Homeopathic Action Trust still funding unethical trials

Posted by gimpy on June 11, 2010

As regular readers will know I have been covering the funding of homeopathic AIDS trials by the Homeopathic Action Trust (HAT), the charitable arm of the Society of Homeopaths (SoH), for some time.  HAT have been aware of my coverage and even invited a reader of my blog, Angus Wood, to give a presentation to them about the issues raised by their activity.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) have even criticised these kind of activities.

This did not change anything.  Their latest accounts are now available at the Charity Commission website and it is clear that they are still funding homeopaths who believe that sugar pills can successfully treat AIDS and malaria and are now expanding into India.

Health in Africa project
The charity has been fundraising to meet the requirements of what is now the Tanzanian project. With an annual volume of 12,000 patients in the Natural Therapies Centre, Dar Es Salaam, consultant Mr. Sigsbert Rwegasira, experienced in treating patients with homeopathy, is working closely with the team.

Africa Project
The projects are now undertaking a new series of research initiatives in Africa and India and are also putting in place a low cost clinic education and support structure for Africa, which involves special remedy kits, training manuals and clinical support. We have assured funding for this for the next year and we are also applying to the Gates Foundation for more funding and also the EU.

The Swaziland Homeopathy Project is one of HAT’s initiatives.  In their objectives they very clearly state their intent to perform medical trials on people with an incurable disease who do not have access to appropriate healthcare:

carry out a scientifically verifiable study on the effect of Homeopathy as a treatment for the side effects of the ART

This study, like previous HAT projects, appears to be in breach of the ethical requirements for human trials, not least The Declaration of Helsinki.

The homeopaths at HAT and the SoH are medical fantasists and cargo cult researchers, anybody who thinks they have a role to play in healthcare is very, very wrong.

“we are also applying to the Gates Foundation for more funding”

Is there an implication here that the Gates Foundation are already funding homoeopathic nostrums?
(ie they are after “more” funding)

Homeopaths have applied to the Gates Foundation before. And been turned down for funding.

This extremely intelligent consize post of yours provokes a few questions as to idiots like the royalty members of the British crown who have employed homeopathic doctors for over 150 years and still do and others like David Beckham, former president Clinton and other 12 presidents of the USA, the royalty in Belgium, Spain, heads of states in Greece, India, Britain (Tony Blair and Disraely), artists, The late Yehudi menuhin, Tina Turner, Henry James, Millionairs like Rockefeller.

      • warhelmet said

Well, perhaps Jeremy Sherr should ask some of these people for funding.

bill gates pays to destroy Africans’ health through the WHO’s despicable form of services to this part of the world, so that the people succumb and giveup their land. He is doing it by contributing to Farma to do whatever they damn please. Farma and a few other conglomerates are making their devious steps of taking over the world, with your kind, eloquent and libellious support, with people like Jeremy and friends he will not succeed.

WE HAVE SEEN THE BRIGHT FACES IN THE SECOND AND THIRD FOLLOWUPS AFTER TREATMENTS!

AND HAVE FOLLOWED ON THEIR REMEDIAL LOGIC.

Almost two years of success in treating those poor people refute Gimpy’s and co’s statements, and make tthem sound pure folly

Be informed that Jeremy Sherr His wife Camilla (also a homeopath) joined with a constantly flowing stream of homeopaths (some MD’s, and an expert in Medical research) from all over to volounteer in their clinic (come farm) in Tansania.

We Homeopaths in Israel have contributed to further support his work their, as other homeopaths have done in various other countries.

We have seen the videos of first case taking and follow ups, we know how a real cure looks, v ersus a false one. For one you can see it in their healthy smile. and two the task continues they have the local allopathic dostors suppor, both in the treatment of MAlaria and AIDS.

As Some of us have said before you would have to eat you hats or HAT some day to really stop this going on.

you will Probably find a cunning way to ignor or cover the REAL CURE.

YOu have a good tool and you use it to abuse the very truth.

Rosa, thanks for your report, what I have to say is a quote from an interesting article by Dr. Mercola, reciting Schopenhauer.

Truth is Violently Opposed Before it is Accepted as Self Evident
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) was a German philosopher known for his philosophical clarity. I believe he made one of the most valuable observations on the shifting of human views on truth as he stated that all truth goes through three steps:

    First, it is ridiculed.
    Second, it is violently opposed.
Finally, it is accepted as self-evident
This is not only true for health but all areas of life. However

    • Nash said

It’s self-evident to others that homeopathy is rubbish. When are you going to accept it?

      • avidan said

Self evidence from you is like a prolonged trial of one of the farma’s they are both ‘reliable’ intelligent and well put to the public to swollow.

You have nothing to worry about when you slander a true healing profession, and professionals, but if you shun their ruth you maybe avoiding what is best for you in time of illness and strife. Yes, some of the great conspirators of big farma enjoy homeopathy.

  7. warhelmet said

Cure? That should be easy enough to prove. Some ELISA and Western Blot tests, performed by an accredited laboratory, should do the job.

As for the suggestion that Sherr has the sort of local doctors – “Jeremy who?”

    • avidan said

A host of doctors and health officials are consulting Jeremy concerning AIDS patients.

Eat your helmet already, chew it well.

      • warhelmet said

Are they? Who told you that?

If it was Jeremy Sherr, he has a history of claiming support from people who deny all knowledge of him. I’ve had correspondance with institutions that Sherr claimed to have support from who deny any contact. And it isn’t just me that has come across this. This is not untypical of skeptics’ experience of any of the western homeopaths doing their crazy bit in Africa.

  8. yesalem said

    yes WATERHELMET,

You can see it also in the laboratory tests, those that were taken, tests cost money and those people are happy to save a few bucks, especially when they are well! You can see their wellness, yes.

    • warhelmet said

No. If Jeremy Sherr is engaged in legitimate research, he should be paying for lab tests. “You can see their wellness” is not sufficient evidence if you understand how HIV/AIDS can progress. Smiling faces are not evidence of cure. Claiming that homeopathy exists in poverty is nonsense. People like Jeremy Sherr can afford to indulge their African adventures because they generate income via teaching, lecturing and books. Certainly in the UK, homeopathy is a pursuit of the bourgeoisie.

      • yesalem said

Yes WATERHELMET right you are, smiling round faces are not proof.
THERE ARE TESTS TO PROVE THEIR CURE

Jeremy is not paying for their tests, he pays for some of their foods, he engages the patients in working their farm. He needs funds, we in Israel contributed, as well as other homeopaths in other countries.

He has ours and his patients blessings. We have seen the videos theres a lot to be learned by them.

      • logiclad said

Yesalem, still making with the poor plays on peoples names, What do you think that achieves?

I am sorry to break it to you but a bunch of people all claiming to have seen improvements in health is not evidence, it is anecdotes. If the magic sugar pills can really do what is claimed then some very simple tests would prove it, strange how these tests never seem to get done. A more cynical person than my self might be inclined to think that the results would not go the way the way of the magic pill vendors.

      • warhelmet said

But without tests, there is no real evidence. And I thought that Sherr wanted to do trials that proved that homeopathy helped with HIV/AIDS. Testing is part of that.

Oh, if Sherr has cured HIV/AIDS but can’t find the money for tests, I would certainly pay for some tests for patients with a lab confirmed HIV diagnosis. The tests aren’t that expensive.

      • dt said

So Jeremy pays for their food and engages them to work on the farm. Is he a social worker?

For someone to say to the generous man who has just given them money and other contributions to their welfare and livelihood “Yes doctor, I feel better now” hardly counts as valid scientific evidence of a homeopathic AIDS cure, yet that seems to be what is implied.

If Jeremy is really wanting to test his remedies without all the confounding baggage of his “social work”, then he can do this simply in a double blinded, placebo controlled fashion, which would be very simple to do, even in his situation.

But homeopaths oddly enough never do these studies (because they know exactly what the results would be).

  9. yesalem said

And why pray you, gimpy is my comment awaiting moderation, what have i written this time that provokes this ?

Mother teresa and Rockeffeller used homeopathy, the latter did not let any physician come close to him but homeopaths.
Mother Teresa used homeopathic remedies in aid of the countless helpless whom she cured, along with her sisters who studied the use of these remedies.

    The day will come..

    • Chris said

Mother Teresa also took donations but seldom spent it to help the needy, but instead it was siphoned elsewhere. She was not a saint.

The Rockefellers are a family with many prominent members. Looking at the Rockefeller Foundation’s health site, I see no mention of homeopathy. Doing a search on that site for homeopathy brings up no hits.

Also, a reminder certain people used homeopathy is not evidence that homeopathy works. What shows homeopathy works is showing that it does work. Infect some mice with a pathogen, the treat one third with real medicine, one third with homeopathy and let the remaining third receive nothing.

    • logiclad said

      Nioma

The fact that some famous people used homeopathy does not mean it works, it means that the people in question believed it worked.

In the case of Mother Teresa, she may have used homeopathy on the poor people that ended up in her homes, but when she was ill she was straight to the conventional doctors, so she wasn’t that convinced.

Homeopathy is attractive to the poor and people who ‘help’ the poor because it offers much for little cost, emphasis on offers.

    • Chris said

Whether she was nice or not, facts are facs she and her crew of sisters who were homeopathically trained used homeopathic remedies and managed to help countless people during her long years of dedicated work.

The day will come that many of you will use homeopathy, there is more and more scientific breakthrough on water and resonances that prove that diluted substances beyond avogadro work.

How pray theee will you explain Love that is the essential “substance” for every human growth.

Not everything is human logic or rather dogma!
